The Part of Motherhood Nobody Talks About.
I’ve been there — the nursing chair, the pump parts spread across the kitchen counter, and the quiet panic of wondering whether your body is keeping up.
When I became a mother, I was also in the middle of one of the most demanding seasons of my corporate career. Breastfeeding came naturally at first, but after returning to work just eight weeks postpartum, my milk supply dropped drastically. I felt exhausted, discouraged, and overwhelmed trying to balance work, pumping schedules, and motherhood all at once.
So I started researching obsessively.
I tested old wives’ tales, studied herbal traditions from different cultures, interviewed mothers about rituals passed down through generations, and turned my kitchen into what my family jokingly called a science lab. I wasn’t trying to start a company — I was simply trying to continue breastfeeding my baby.
Eventually, I created products that genuinely helped me — and then helped my friends, neighbors, and other breastfeeding moms who began asking for them too. Word quietly spread from one mother to another, and a few years later, I opened a small Etsy shop simply to organize orders and continue helping women through this demanding season of life.
I never imagined that one personal rescue line would grow into a 17-year mission.
Today, The Milky Wave may finally look like a “real” grown-up company, but at its heart, it is still deeply personal. Every tea, cookie, brownie, and blend was created from lived experience, research, care, and countless conversations with mothers trying their best.
